The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
Located in the heart of Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is known for its incredible biodiversity and rich array of fauna. DRC’s seasonally flooded forests, and grasslands offer a perfect environment for unique species for both animals and plants to thrive.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to unique endemic and/or endangered species such as the ones listed below
Bonobo Pan paniscus
According to Worldwildlife.org, Bonobos and chimpanzees look similar, and both share 98.7% of their DNA with humans — making them the closest living relatives of humans. Bonobos are usually a bit smaller, leaner, and darker than chimpanzees. Bonobos tend to be more peaceful (however, if two groups of bonobos come together, they may engage in serious fights) and are led by females. Wild bonobos can only be found in forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Okapi Okapia johnstoni
Also known as the “forest giraffe,” the Okapia johnstoni or simply Okapi is a unique and threated mammal native to the dense rainforests of the DRC, specifically the Ituri province. While its stripes could get it confused with a zebra, the Okapi is more closely related to the giraffe; and unlike giraffes who prefer to live in groups, the Okapi are solitary animals.
Congo Peafowl Afropavo congensis
The Congo Peafowl is one of only three species of peafowl: An endemic bird species with striking plumage 2.
FLORA
According to Worldwildlife, the Congo River Basin forests are crucial biodiversity hotspots. Home to numerous plant species that are unique to this Central Africa region and found nowhere else on Earth.
The Congo River Environment and Development Project (CREDP) estimates that in the DRC alone, 11,000 forest plant species have been described, of which over 1,100 of these are found nowhere else and about 69 species are threatened.
Among the key plant species are
Gabon Ebony Diospyros crassiflora
endangered tree species known for its exceptionally dark heartwood, and highly valued for its durability and fine texture.
Emin’s Strophanthus Strophanthus eminii
this plant is used locally for medicinal purposes, such as treating snakebites and skin diseases.
Glabra Anubias barteri var
aquatic and semi-aquatic plant that thrives in rainforest streams and swamps. The plant is popular in aquarium’ usage due to its reduced requirements and low predation by herbivorous fishes.
